Winston Layne
Winston was born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas, where he attended Eastern Hills High School and graduated valedictorian in 1979. He entered college at Texas Christian University on full scholarship and later transferred to the University of Texas at Austin, finishing his Bachelor of Science in Physics in 1983. Winston entered graduate school there on a Welch Fellowship and earned his Doctorate in with a specialty in Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics. His dissertation was titled “A Time and Wavelength Resolved Study of Xenon-Chlorine Reactive Quenching.”
Winston’s industrial career was spent mostly in ten years work growing and studying nano-scale, self-ordering optically active thin films, specifically polarizing films for the visible and near infrared spectral regions. These films were primarily aluminum and silver and associated composites. The work was done at Integrated Photonics and at its parent company, Polatomic, where Winston also worked on optical detection systems for ultra-sensitive (pico-tesla) magnetometers. Study of the surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy of the above polarizing films led to collaboration with the Nano Tech Institute, which he joined in February 2005.
